SOUTHTOWNE SPECIES HABITAT RESTORATION
Southtowne is helping restore the Natural Resource Corridor to Fern
Ridge Lake. We have the responsibility for a portion of a 22 acre
parcel West and adjacent to Greenhill Road. It is 15 acres of wetland
and a 7 acre upland strip adjacent to the Amazon Channel. This is part of
the endangered Blue Fenders Butterfly habitat area.
For the last three years, we Rotarians have helped plant and maintain the
area. Most of the work consist of removing the grass mat and keeping it out
long enough for the native vegetation to get established. We have done 3/4
of an acre and have another six acres to plant.
The first step this year is to kill the existing grass and reduce the seed
deposits. This will take at least two application of grass killer before it
is are ready to till for a Fall planting.
Meanwhile, there is maintenance to be done of the area already planted. It
includes removing grass from around the Checker Mallows, Kincaids
Lupine, Oregon Sunshine and other rare plants. There is also a need to do
some transplanting of the many seedling from our existing vegetation. A
great way to help improve our environment. On a nice day, it a fun gardening
project for the whole family.
