PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
Southtowne Rotarians are not just in Rotary. Rather,
Rotary is in us. We actively participate in international service projects
such as our stove projects in Africa and South America where we build and
install stoves to replace open hearth cooking fires so dangerous to the
health of mothers and children. We regularly send groups to Colima Mexico
to build water systems and other facilities to improve the lives of the
people in that area. We renovate schools in Eugene, provide school supplies
to underprivileged grade school students, provide dictionaries to students,
and socks to homeless families. We staff Food For Lane County every month
to help provide food to less fortunate families. Our club, along with other
Rotary Clubs of Eugene – Springfield, sponsor the Great Rotary Duck Race,
which provides approximately $250,000 per year to agencies that fight child
abuse and neglect. As a direct result of Rotary’s efforts and the efforts
of these agencies, Lane County has seen a decrease in child abuse and child
neglect.
In addition to these international and local service
projects we have fun. We have entertaining and informative meetings each
Thursday at noon, which always include lots of camaraderie and socializing.
Annually, we host high school foreign exchange students
and sponsor local high school students as they travel and study abroad in
Rotary’s exchange program.
Southtowne Rotarians carry on the work started in 1905
when Paul Harris started this great service organization. Southtowne was
founded in 1975 and has strived each year since to be better and better at
practicing Rotary.
